FIRE ON “REMUERA.”
52 MAIL BAGS MISSING. WELLINGTON, Jan. 11. The lirer Renwera’s mails shelved a shortage on arrival here. A fire took place on the Remuera during the recent passage from London. The outbreak was discovered on December 23rd, two days after the ship left Panama. On the .afternoon of that day smoke was observed coming from one of the for-
ward ventilators, and the fire was io i-atid amongst the Christmas mail in No. 2 hold. The outbreak was exting
aisled in a short time. The extent of the damage to the mail had not been ascertained up to the time ot arrival here to-dav. No Jotters were destroyed,
lhe mail matter in No. 2 hold consist ing chiefly of packages. During tin extinguishing operations the ship v. a stopped. The opinion was expressed b; an officer of the ship that the fire wa caused by the spontaneous ignition o
some substance in one of the part ages. Fine weather prevailed at th time and there was no ex-'itement. The vessel carried 1112 bags o Christmas mail when she started, o her voyage, but the Post Office ai nounces that 52 bags are not aceoiinte for.
