*■ FATAL FALL FROM HORSE. AUCKLAND, January 11. The death occurred in the Auckland 1-lospital to day of Nelson Ross, aged 29, of Grey Lynn, who sustained a fracture of the skull when he fell oil* :1 horse at Helensville on Sunday. BUSH LOCO GOES OVER BOY. ROTORUA, Jan. 11. A schoolboy, Tohetohe Arapeta. aged 13, was killed by a locomotive belonging to the Rotoiti Timber Coy., at 6 p.m. yesterday. The boy is said to have been riding on the engine contrary to orders, and to have fallen off. the engine passing over him. An inquest is being held at Rotoiti this afternoon. CHILD KILLED BY MOTOR. WELLINGTON, -lan. 11. An inquest is proceeding regarding the death of the four-year-old boy Kox Hardinge McCullough, as a result of be ing knocked down by a motor car driven in Adelaide road by Dr. Paget ot Island Bay. The child’s mother said that three children were playing on, the street, she saw the car leaving towards town at a moderate speed on its correct side. Deceased left the others and ran across in front of the cai.
Dr. Paget gave evidence that he approached Chilka Street at twenty miles per hour, and was watching the intersectiqn. He suddenly saw the child running across, a few feet from the car. The child was struck by the | mudguard. He stopped at once and took the child to the hospital. He was paying all attention to driving and no conversation was going on. After corroborative and police cvi-1 deuce the jury found that no blame was attachable to Dr. Paget, and expressed sympathy witii the mother and doctor. , , The jury added a rider that children should 'bo specially instructed by parents and school teachers, in the dangers of crossing busy streets. WOMAN DIES OF BURNS. WIAPAWA, Jan. 11. Alice Norman, aged 25, single, a cook at Hie Commercial Hotel, sustained fatal injuries through burning last evening. Some fat on the stove caught fire, and the flames ignited her blouse. She ran screaming into the street, and before the flames could be extinguished with a rug, she was shockingly burned. After receiving medical attention she was removed to the hospital where she succumed to her injuries during the night. DROWING IN A CREEK. FOXTON, January 11. While spearing for eels in a creek
near Rangiotu yesterday* afternoon, an elderly Maori woman named Pikihuia Tamati had a seizure and fel 1 face down in six inches of water. Her ten- year- old grandson was unable to raise her and communicated with his mother, about, a mile distant, but on returning found her dead. RAILWAYMAN KILLEDNAPIER, Jan. 11. James Holloway, a fitter in the railway workshops at Napier was run down by a ballast train in the yards this morning, when walking to tho workshops to begin his day’s work. He was killed instantly, being badly mutilated by the plough of tho under-carriage of the. truck, which was in front of the engine. Deceased apparently did not see or hear the train approacnitig.
