(Our Ow» correspondent.} W LSTPORT, December 9. A deputation of the citizens and the Finance Committee of the Municipal Band met the committee of the Trotting Club on Tuesday evening with a request that the Band should be engaged lor the two days’ meelin°' at Christmas. The answer has since arriv ed—(urned down 1 Mr Croudis, of Burnett’s Face, arrived back in Westport on Tuesday jevening. Mr Croudis went to Christchurch ami then to the North Island. Mr Norman Whiting, who was only years of age, passed away at Auckland on Monday night. He had been • n ill health for sonic time, and his death was not altogether unexpected. Mrs Lee McDonald is his sister, and left on Tuesday for Auckland. The City Hotel is looking quite smart. Airs Shaw has had it painted and decorated, ami now Lon Pov/ick is I getting a new verandah erected, which is of such a substantial nature that it I will hold quite fifty people to view the I Jubilee Procession go by. It is reported that the dredge ‘‘Ma-i iwhera,” as soon as sne can dig her mooring cable up cut of the shingle, will have to give dredging best for a while, as ar. extensive overhaul is necessary. As shingle appears to bo tin* matter requiring removal, and the ‘‘Liken Ward’’ being practically a sand pump, what lias become of the authority which the late Harbour Board was granted to procure an upto date combined suction and bucket dredge? This economy stunt is not going to do West port much good. Looks like 100 many canny Stmts in power. I The following communication has' reached the Mayor. Mr C. IL Greenland: ‘“Their Royal Highnesses will now spend Thursday night, March 10, at West poll, proceeding to Greymouth the following morning. Will advise you later hour of arrival and departure from your town. —Richard F. Bollard, Minister of Internal Affairs.” The Westport Athletic and Cycling Association abandoned their evening meeting on Tuesday and have decided to hold no more, of them until the new year. They will lie very busy, however, during Jubilee week. So far £3(iS has been subscribed ami raised for the Flood Relief Fund. Granily has contributed £(>S. The money carries a Government subsidy. The sum of £3l lb/- was raised to provide the Buller Hospital with a radio set by the agency of the recent boys’ boxing tourney. At St. (Janice’s Church on Wednesday, Mr Larsen and Aliss Lily Shan-] non were married, Rev. Father Bowe officiating. Miss R. Powell was bridesmaid. Aliss Al. Regan Hower girl, and .Mr J. Shannon best man. The happy couple left afterwards for ChristM r Chas. Jones, who is taking a railway post al Greymouth, was presented by Ihe Athletic ami Cycling Club with a travelling bag. The Te Kuhn sports on January Ist promise to be an ambitious affair. There are no less than 15 events, besides tin' usual sports lor children. The Returned Soldiers’ Club-are advertising sports at Cape 1 oulwiad on .January Ist. As showing the footing engendered in the youthful mind by the sufferings brought about by Ih(‘ Ttoorr, the following is a sample:—“ll7, ytomilly Street. Westport. Ihu-ember G: Air Greenland.
