SPAHLINGER SERUM.

TESTS AT GENEVA. EFFECT ON ('AT'I'LE. | GENEVA, December 8. | Spahlinger’s bovine tests have b.-cu :->icce ssfully completed. He sr.reevded lin ininiunisihg cattie against tubercu iusis on the same principle as 'human beings are vaccinated against sinaii pox. The experiments were con under the strict supervision of M. An tonine Bron, President of the Geneva Government, Monsieur Larue and Monsieur Montant, official veterinary surgeons. Two groups of calves of the same age, weight and breed were ail certified free from tuberculosis. Spahiiiiger vaccinated one group wi:h the simplified bovine Vaccines, with which he has been experimenting for years. Spahlinger had refused offers to commercialise the vaccines, because he wanted to produce them so cheaply that they would be ’within reach of everyone, therefore he concentrated on simplifying the methods of immunisation and curing. The methods are now described. Ta various forms, quantities of simplified vaccines wore used on heifers with a view’ to ascertaining, firstly, what combination of vaccims and what dosages would prevent a vaccinated calf from contracting Tnbei-'”.li> is, when inoculated with a dose of virulent virus, such as encountered by animals in normal life. Secondly, what combination and dosage would prevent a vaccinated calf contracting tuberculosis when injected with massive doses of virus. Spahlinger’s vaccination virus was taken from the virulent cultures of I bovine tubercle, and rendered hypertoxie by Spahlinger’s method of irritating the strains, after which equal quantities of these germs were placed in ampv.llas and handed to M. Bron, in whose possession they remained until I the calves had been injected. After Hie virus had been injected, all tho animals wore placed in the keeping "f Genova State officials, who alone had access to them during the experiments. Tho results of the tests can only be descriiiod as amazing. All tho. cattle vaccinated with. Spahlinger’s simplified bovine vaccines successfully resisted infection and showed no trace of tuberculosis nt the autopsv, savs At. Larue, all the unvaec.inated calves had developed progressive tuberculosis. M. Bron, confirming the result, adds: Tho experiment was successful bevond all hopes. The results now open a new horizon of preventive immnmooHoti of cattle, and justify tho hope that before long, humanity will be relieved of one of its most appalling mladies.
