FOUND DEAD. ' AUCKLAND, Oct. 12. A middle-aged single man, Jeremiah McGrath, was found dead at Swanson, apparently the victim of accidental poisoning. FATAL EFFECT OF ANKLE FRACTURE. TIMARU, Oct. 12. Mrs C. Sullivan, of Teinuka, slipped on a doorstep a few days ago and broke her ankle, a bone protruding. She was taken to the hospital, where the wound was cleaned and dressed, but gangrene set in and though the leg was amputated, the woman died. At the inquest the verdict was that death was the result of an accident.

ANOTHER WAIROA FIRE.

WAIROA, Oct. 12.

A disastrous fire occurred shortly before four o’clock this morning, resulting in the main office of the Public Works Department at North Clyde being completely destroyed, together with valuable instruments and records.

The fire brigade promptly turned out but owing to the building being outside the borough boundary, no water mains were available, and the brigade was helpless.

The origin of the fire is unknown. The loss to tlie Department will be considerable, as the records of various local works, including the Waikaremoana East Coast Railway (Wairoa ■section); etc., were lost, and will probably result in delaying the prosecution of these works.
