PERSONAL.

Mesuames Foote, Young, Wilson and Gothard, of Westport, returned home yesterday after a visit to Greymouth.

A Reuter’s cablegram from London stated that Their Majesties gave an audience to Sir Francis Bell.

Mr Harry Melville, who has been or a visit to his parents in Australia, returned yesterday to Greymouth.

Mrs. J. Graham left for Christchurch by yesterday morning’s express after attending the funeral of her mother, the late Mrs. E. Fitzgibbon.

Nurse Kennedy, of the staff of Rewa Maternity Hospital, leaves to-morrow by the express on a month’s holiday.

Mr Jas Thomas, of the Grevmouth Railway Workshops Staff, is at present among the sufferers from the prevailing epidemic.

Mr J. Kennedy, motor projiriotor, Guinness Street, underwent, a serious operation at the Grey Hospital on Wednesday. He is progressing as well as can be expected.

Miss M. Halpin who has been visiting her father at Totara Flat, was a passenger on yesterday’s express for Christchurch.

Archdeacon Carr, Rev Bloyce and Mr C. B. Alabin will leave Greymouth on Monday to attend the Diocesan Synod at Nelson.

Miss Muff arrived from Christchurch by yesterday’s express on a visit to her sister, Mrs. J. C. Gittos, Albert Terrace.

Mrs. C. McKechnie of Greymouth, is reported to be progressing satisfactorily after undergoing an operation on Wednesday at Lewisham Hospital. Christchurch.

The funeral of the late Mary Kennedy took place yesterday morning, leaving St. Patrick’s Church for Karoro Cemetery. Requiem Mass and the service at the graveside were conducted by Rev. Father McGuire.

Master Charles Fraser left Greymouth yesterday by the express en route to AV ellington. A number of his schoolmates of the Greymouth Marist School gathered at the station to bid him farewell.

Sister K, Sims t who has since the resignation of Miss M. Shine, acted as Matron of Rewa Hospital, leaves to-morrow on her return to Christchurch.

Mr P,. Grant of the Union Steamship Company’s Greymouth branch, left by the express yesterday en route to Sydney. During his month’s leave of absence he is being relieved by Mr E. J. Pearse, of the Head Office, Wellington.

Mr C. V. Ferris, for the past five years Instructor in Science at the Grey Technical School, has been appointed to a similar position in the Christchurch Technical College. He will be leaving Greymouth shortly to take up his new duties.

Miss E. McGibbon, who has been appointed to the position of Matron of the Rewa Maternity Hospital, arrived in Greymouth yesterday to take over her duties. Miss McGibbon, who has just relinquished a responsible post on the staff of the Listar Private Hospital of Wellington, in addition to being a Registered Nurse, has high qualifications for her new position both by experience and examination. She qualified with honours for her Midwifery Certificate, and at the same time passed her ante-natal examination. Her experience includes that of Matron of a combined Maternity and General Hospital. Miss McGibbon will enter immediately on her duties at Rewa.

A telegram states that a large representative gathering of citizens and journalists assembled to bid farewell to Mr Fred J. Earle, a prominent Wellington journalist, who is leaving the capital city to take up the position of Managing Director of the Nelson Evening Mail. In the absence of Mayor Norwood, Mr Martin Luckie (Deputy Mayor) eulogised Mr Earle’s splendid efforts. He had always possessed high ideals, and had done valuable work in the interests of the highest and best standard of journalism. Sir Joseph Ward and Wellington journalists similarly acclaimed Mr Earle’s application, enthusiasm, and probity, and wished him every success. On behalf of the citizens, a valuable present was made to Mr Earle, while the journalists presented him with a handsome rug. . a J

The death took place at 2.30 o'clock this morning at her Residence, Blaketown, of Airs Alary Steel, a pioneer of the West Coast, at the age of 75 years. For many years, she was a resident of Dillmanstown, and was widely known and respected. She was a native of Australia, and came to New Zealand in the early days. Mr. Jas. Steel, senr., of the Golden Eagle Hotel, Greymouth is a son of the deceased, and Mrs AlcGirr of Blaketown is a daughter. She leaves in all a family of seven sons and five daughters. Her husband predeceased her by seven years. The late Mrs Steel was one of the best type of pioneers, and she had been no less than fifty-six years on the Coast. Among the numerous grandchildren is Air. Jack Steel, the world-famous Rugby footballer.
