BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council was held lasi evening, the Mayor, Mr W. H. Pariitt, presiding. There ■were also present:— Councillors F. A. Kitchingham, G. PeTotti, J. O’Brien, R. J. Williams, H. r. Doogan, G. R. Harker, J. B.- Kent, J. McGinley, and Mr F. H. Denton (Town Clerk), and Mr A. J. Fairmaid (Engineer). An apology was received for the ab sence of the Deputy-Mayor, Cr J . AV. Greenslade. VERANDAH SHELTER. The New Zealand Railways Department wrote stating that a request for the provision of a verandah shelter for the unloading of chaff and potatoes at Grcyniouth had been approved and the site suggested was on the local siding between Gresson Street and the Harbour Board siding. As the proposed position was on the public road the Department wished to obtain the Bor ough Council’s consent as to the position of the railway. It was moved that consent be given to the Railway Department to erect the shed.

A request was received from the Social Committee of the Marist Ohl Boys’ Football Club for the use of the Museum room on the night of July 27 for supper purposes in connection with the ball in honour of Messrs Wright and Mouatt, the two West Coast re .presentatives to tour England with the New Zealand Rugby League team. Th? request was granted. A telegram was received from the Member for Westland, Mr T. E. Y. Seddon, intimating that the Minister gave a favourable reply to the deputation which waited on him on July 21 re completing the Greymouth-Wcstpori Road. The telegram was received.

APPROACH TO TECH. SCHOOL. Attention was drawn to the state of the approach to the Engineering Workshop connected -with the Greymouth Technical School in a letter received from the Secretary of the Board of Governors. A considerable number o' apprentices and others now attended the classes held at the workshop in Marlborough Street, it was stated am! their only means of access lay along a plank over an open drain of about three feet depth. Since the street lighting was particularly defective at this point, the Council could quite w-l: see that the position was a very inconvenient as well as a dangerous one. The Board asked the Council to provide better lighting at this point by installing a. street light close to the entrance and also to provide better access across the street drain to the footpath and entrance-way to the grounds. It was moved that the matter be left in hands of the Works Committee and the Engineer with power Io act. USE OF RECREATION GROUP'D. R.ference to the complaint made b\ ithe Greymouth Football Association against the alleged unfair treatment meted out to them by the West Coasl Rugby Football League in the mattci of the use of the Recreation Ground was made in a letter received from the Secretary of the latter body. A protest was entered against the Associa tion’s letter on the subject and thCouncil was assured that, contrary to the Association’s assertion, they ha< been treated with the utmost fairness and, further, the terms of the conference had been faithfully carried out In any case, as the Centre pointed ou’ the agreement with the Association was not made with one club but with the governing body and the writ r f l sure that it had no grievance with th treatment received from the League a; it had endeavoured to meet the othr body in every way, amicably and fair ly. The letter was received. REPORT TO BE FURNISHED. Arising out of this matter Council lor Kitchingham stated that the Re« reation Ground was the subject of di. cushion at the meeting to form a Beau tifying Committee during the weci 'The previous engineer, Mr Willin'".* was to have furnished ? report, bu‘ left without doing so. The speaker moved that the engineer be asked to report on the whole matter as to th* drainage and laying out of the ground. The resolution was carried.

Cr Doogan reported that the author) ties now agreed to exempt sections .1 and 2 of Block 203 in Lombard Street on condition no building was erected within 35ft of the centre of the roadway. It was moved that the Council by resolution, declare that the provisions of the Act shall apply so long as .no building was erected within 35ft of the centre of the roadway. FINANCE COMMITTEE.

The Finance Committee met on July 15th the Mayor and Councillors Kitchingham, O'Brien, Kent, Perotti. Wil liams, McGinley and Greenslade (Chairman) being present. The following busi ness was. transacted, the Council being asked to endorse the Committee’s recommendations: ] —That Mr. R. Cooper be appointed Caietakcr of Borough Reserves. 2. Accounts amounting to £7SS 6s 10<I are recommended for payment and accounts amounting to £1055 6s 6d winch were paid since last meeting were examined. 3. The question of the street lighting agreement between the Grey Kleetrie Power Board and the Council be held over for another week. 4— 'matter of the duties of one of the Borough staff was held over until tho next Finance meeting and in the meantime his schedule of duties be enquired into. 5— The Committee cannot see its way to recommend a grant to the Keefton School of Mines. 6— The question of sub-division ot a section in Alexander Street was left in the hands of the Engineer to report. 7 It is recommended that the Council accept the offer of Mrs Ochsenbcin and others to dedicate part of Kilgour Road, subject to kerbing being put down. Bank credit on 31-6-26 £4208 17s 6d. PUMPING PLANT. The Waterworks Committee reported on the new pumping plant as follows. — “After full investigation of the nature of the ground it has been seen to bo necessary to shift the location of the plant from the inside of the present station to a position immediately on the downstream side of the foundations of the existing buildings. The position as selected will ensure, the foundations of the new plant against settlement and adequate protection will IW secured against possible flood damage. The Works Committee’s report was adopted. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The report of the Borough Engineer, Mr. Fairmaid was as follows: — “During the period the repair of

the footpaths in Guinness, Tarapuh and Whall Streets has been carried out the footpath between Boundary Street and Preston Road has been put in order at the Boundary Street end; noxi ous weeds have * been cleared in Shakespeare and High Streets at the .Southern ends; the addition to tin Municipal Band room has been com pleted, the fencing and erection of no Liccs, as authorised, has been attendee Io at the rubbish dump. Work has been commenced on the formation of Mos.Street. The going is somewhat difficult on account of the outcrop of limestone. Building permits issued July 9th. t< July 22nd.—inc 1 usive:—

Waterworks.—The pipe in Miitor Road has been extended for 100 feet tc give supply applied for there. Until the 4in. cast iron pipe at present being on quired for, is to hand, no other course was open. Arrangements have been made with the Gas Works Manager for the use of some 4in. cast iron pipe which ho has in stock for the purpose of extending the main southwards in Blake Street to give supply asked for This is part of the 4in. reticulation authorised in Blaketown. The plans ol lhe new electric centrifugal pumping plant have come to hand and work ha.* been commenced on the preliminaries •towards the installation of the ma chine.

Public Pound.—T have inspected th above-named, and have to report as fol ‘lows:—lt. is recommended that a shei .ter shed be. erected to give protection to impounded cattle in inclement weather; also that the statutory notice board be provided. The estimated total cost of the Work as outlined is £35.
