RURAL CREDITS.
AND THE BANK OF N.Z. Mr H. E. Holland, M.R., in the Bud got debate: The Budget refers to the N.Z. Royal Commission which has just made its European visit, and while I think the Commission’s report will tell us a great deal of what we already know, 1 am still satisfied that the report will be very valuable. The Budget also refers to the Bank of New Zealand proposal to establish a branch of business on the long-term table mortgage system to assist in developing and improving the conditions of the primary producers. This means that, now that the Rural Oredits Commission has operated as an incentive the Bank is promising to do what its spokesmen were saying, not ■o long ago, that the State could not do. It remains to be seen whether the Bank’s new move will interfere with legislation providing for rural credits. J notice the Budget says that until the report of the Royal Commission is in the Government’s hands they do not propose to take any steps in connection with the introduction of legislation dealing with agricultural banking and finance. I want to~a.sk whether the report will be laid before the House this session. I think honourable member.'’ are entitled to ask for the report this session. If the report is tabled, as it should be, will legislation be introduced this session providing for rural credits t In any case both Parliament and the Government would be well advised to see that the Bank of New Zealand’s very much over-due move is not allowed to interfere with the institution of rural credits in this country.
