SPORT IN BULLER.

(By “Sasanof ”). SOCCER SUCCESS. The meritorious win of the Buller Soccer team over Canterbury in the [game for the Peter Dawson Cup came as a very pleasant surprise to the large majority of followers of the code in these parts, and because the win was unexpected, the more hearty are the congratulations to Manager Tom Calder and his coterie of Cup conquerors. The | Buller team was minus two or three of its best players, but nevertheless proved the goods in what must have been a fast and brilliant exhibition of the code. The coming of the Peter Dawson Cup to Westport will mean a big impetus to Soccer, and if the Buller Rugby lions annex the Seddon Shield, there should be something doing in Buller next year,. “Sasanof” would not care to be one of the City Fathers when the arguments for rights to Victoria Square crop up. more particularly if the League people happen to gain a trophy that will require to be competed for on the Square. However, the more the merrier. Let them all come and boost the Buller, and the Progress League will then receive a well earned rest from their so-called publicity boosts. Business people welcome the arrival of these treasured trophies in their midst, as Palmerston Street is certainly the hub of the universe when any big sporting function eventuates in Westport. RUGBY RESPITE. . The weather on Friday was well up to Buller’s worst winter conditions, and early Saturday morning the rain fell in torrents, and all matches were post’poned. About noon, however, it cleared and a perfect afternoon was the result, with no football on. It was indeed unfortunate for Rugger fans, who were numerous, and great was the cry of disappointment raised, but it was as usual, everybody’s fault, and so nobody's fault, that the games were not played. The majority, however, w’ere well rewarded when engaged listening in at various wireless sets in town, it being duly announced that our own “Snowy” Svenson had gained the day for the All Blacks in the test match. Svenson is certainly to Buller Rugbyites what Steel is to the Coasters, and his meteoric career is the pride of Buller, where he first came into prominence as a Rugby rep.

UNION v. SUB-UNION. On Saturday next the Buller representative fifteen will journey to Murchison to fulfil a long-promised fixture, and a pood game is expected. The teams selected are as follows:— Murchison team. — P. Gilroy, S. Morris, 11. Roberts, E. Burns, Watson, \V. Borkin, V. Liddicoat, E. Watson (capt.), C. Peak, J. Armstrong, W. Spiers. W. Wallace. S. Austin, E. Heslop, S. Borkin. Emergencies: Backs, J. Down io, I. Bradley; forwards: Bert Spiers, M. Lynch. Buller: Q Kearns, F. O’Brien, S. Davis, B. Stuart, L. Griffiths (capt.), E. Marris, T. Corby. T. O’Neill, R. Gardner, J. Etheridge, A. Pain, G. Stuart. J. Caldwell, W. Me Knight, M. Ford. Emergencies: Forwards, C. McIntyre, W. Champion; backs, J. Harris, T. Connelly. The Murchison team is practically the same as defeat'd Karamea, with a few exception o Gilroy is a promising young full-back, with pretensions t:> Buller honours, and replaces the veteran Morry Korean, while Vai Liddicoat has been put in his right place behind the scrum. Charlie Peck is in as on? of the hookers, replacing Palmer. while the dashing forward, Stove Borkin, takes his place at the back of the scrum. Teddie Burns, a promising Maruia three-quarter, has gained a possie, , and if ho has improved this season ho should prove a good find. The team is a solid one, and the sub-Union boys wi’d keep the BuUerites busy. Watson will certainly be a thorn in the s.de of the Buller attack, as his game against Coast proved him to be the goods. In the Buller vanguard Etheridge is hooking with Gardiner, in place of Clarkson, and should be hard to dispose of. Kearns is again in the full back position. “Sasanof” would like to have seen him given another go as wing-three-quarter. Stan Davies and Snowy Griffiths will again be associated, and the Murchison boys will know these two have been playing. Pain is donning the rep jersey and should fully realise expectations, as he is playing greatlv improved football. The game should be a good one and Selector Dansby will have a further chance of sorting out the best of the sub-union brigade prior to concentrat.ng on the Shield team. Mr J. Baigent, of Murch’son, has been appointed referee, and as he bears the hall-mark of efficiency, bestowed by our friend “Abaydos,” he should prove the goods. HOCKEY. The Buller Hockey Association has decided to send the Westport representative eleven to Karamea on Saturday to play a return game with the Karamea ladies. When the teams met recently in Westport they were evenly matched, the locals gaining the verdict by a narrow margin, but the Karameaites are confident they tan turn the tables next •Saturday. Air Harry Lockey, who was chosen us emergency for the All Blacks against the Indians in the second test, was recalled by his employers owing to staff depletion.. Otherwise he would probably have been included in the final test. The Rewa Club (Nelson) which is shortly to visit this district, will play four matches, against Alokiliinui, Gravity. Denniston and Westport Hockey Chibs. They will also play a match in Reef ton. Local fixtures for ensuing dates are: July 29, Rangers v. Rovers at Granity; j Koronui v. Alokiliinui at Mokihinui. I August sth: Rangers v. Denniston, at i Granity: Koronui v. Rovers at Waiman- i garoa; August 12: Koronui v. Denniston at Denniston; Rovers v. Alokiliinui at Granity; August 19; Rovers v.
