WIDOW’S COMPENSATION CLAIM. CHRISTCHURCH, July 19. At the Supreme Court, the widow of Isaac Welsh, stevedore, killed in an accident on the steamer Canadian Challenger, on Nov. 17, claimed £5,928 ras damages, from the Canadian Government Merchant Marine Ltd., alleging that a sl.ng was defective and so broke, when lioistingi a cask, also that defendants were guilty of negligence. • The defence-contended that the work was under the Control of the Shaw Savill Company, and that Welsh took undue risk. STOXVAWAYS ON JRANE SHIP GISBORNE, July 19. A Tahiti Islander, Harano, who stowed away on the Lyttelton crane steamer Rapaki, and secreted himself in the coal barge tendering the vessel and landed in Gisborne, within a few hours was arrested and charged at the Court, with vagrancy and landing in New Zealand ■without a permit. The Magistrate, sentenced accused to 14 days’ imprisonment, directing thar he be placed on the vessel it leaves Gisborne. WOMEN CHARGED. ADA'ERTISEMENT FRAUD. CHRISTCHURCH, July,- r l9. KI3S2S Shop Girl. AUCKLAND, Jul ; 17. Not “cabbagids and kings” but cabbages and kisses Were the strange com bination featured in a case at the Hamilton Police- Court. A married man who entered a shop yesterday to purchase a cabbage found a f«fteen-year-old young lady assistant more attractive than the vegetables displayed, and feeling somewhat amorous, despite his fifty-two years and the fact that he has a- wife and large family, could not resist the temptation to kiss the girl. His attentions were resented, and as a consequence, ho wa s charged this morning with assault. Accused pleaded guilty. The Bench remarked that it was an awkward case, but they were inclined to give accused the benefit of the advantage under the Act. Accused was old enough to have known better. The case was dismissed.
