Air. W. J. Mcllroy, of Christchurch, and formerly of Kumara and Greyniouth, is at present seriously ill. Tlie Ven. Archdeacon Oarr will leave for Nelson on Monday next to attend the Anglican Synod. Mr. J. Kerr (Petone) who has been visiting relatives in Greymouth, will return North to-day. Miss Watson, of the staff of Mrs Mullan’s Pharmacy, Westport, is leaving fo r Palmerston North where she Intends to permanently reside. Air. and Mrs Gould (South Canterbury) are on a visit to their daughter, Nurse Gould, of the Grey Hospital staff. Mr. J. Lythgoe, engineer to the Power Board, has gone to Wellington to attend the Power Boards’ Engineers’ Conference. Messrs J. Brown, A. P. Burnett, and F. Al arks, members of the Railway Regrading Board, arrived in Greymouth this afternoon from Christchurch. Alaster Leslie Robert Larcombe, pupil of the Greymouth Technical School, has been appointed to a position in the lands Office at Hokitika. Dr. J. W. Alcßrearty, who has been suffering from influenza, expects to be able to resume duty in a few days’ lime. To-day Air. J. W. Greenslade, Chair man Grey Power Board, accompanied by Mr. McDowell, secretary, leaves for AVellington to attend the Power Boards’ conference. Mr. Tom Stuart, sawmiller of Hokitika. whose head was severely injured through being struck by the falling branch of a tree last week, is now progressing towards recovery at the Westland Hospital.
This morning the marriage takes place at Holy Trinity Church of Miss Eileen Skilton, of Cobden, to Mr. R. Greenwood, of Westport. Mr. and Mis H. Greenwood, and Misses J. and O. Greenwood arrived from Westport vesterday to attend the ceremony. Air. C. J. Williams (chief goods shed Ucrk) is at present acting as stationmaster here during the absence on holiday of Mr. J. Fowler, stationmaster. Air Charles Cabot, Advance Man :ig<r for “I he Optimists” Company of international Entertainers, is at present <n the Coast arranging for the Uuinpany an itinerary embracing ail the centres. They will be here on July 29th an! 30th. Air. William Aleldrum S.M., is gazetted to exercise jurisdiction in the Children's Courts at Westport, Dennis ton, Granity and Karamea. and Mr. T. E. Maunsell jurisdiction at Murchison. Air. T. Sullivan, eldest son of Mr. and Airs P. Sullivan, of the Empire Hotel. Reefton. had the misfortune to burn his hand badly with a live wire, lie is visiting his parents. An Auckland wire states that among he passengers by the Aorangi, which arrived at Auckland yesterday, was Major Arnaldo Cipolla, special correspondent of the Italian journal “La Stampa,” who speaks enthusiastically of Alussolini’s rule in Italy. He will spend ten days in New Zealand, first visiting the principal resorts of the North Island. Mr. J. C. (“Sapper”) Smith, of the Railway traffic staff, was yesterday presented by' the railwaymen members of the Cobden Cricket Club with an inscribed bat in recognition of his being the most improved batsman during th© past season amongst the railwaymen. Air. Les Smith, the well-known Rail way suard, is retiring from the service of the Department, his intention being to entei into business on his own account in Canterbury. Last even ing Air. Smith was the guest of a large gathering of members of the various sections of the service, by whom he was presented with a well-filled wallet as a token of esteem. Mr. R Rose, in making the presentation, referred to the fact that Mr. Smith had been a good railwayman for a lengthy term. He had been nineteen years in the service, and had held for thirteen years the position of guard on the Westland section. He had the best wishes of all his colleagues for his future success. A Gisborne wire states word was received last night of the death of Mr. Henry Robson Wood. Manager of the Gisborne Branch of Dalgety and Co. Deceased, who had not been feeling too well lately, was taking a few days holiday at a friend's residence atNgakaroa. He had been chopping trees for exercise, and when he did not return a search was made and his body was found lying on the ground with tho axe nearby, deceased being cut on the hand. No further particulars are to hand. Deceased had been manager in Gisborne since 1922 and'had previousvl been stationed at Masterton, Dannevirke, Napier, Auckland and Whangarei. He was very popular with the staff and the clients of the firm, and news of hi s death came as a great
