During the sea-r-on when Reed’s services were not available, B. 11. Morris rode for tin stable, but Morris is engaged foi Civility in the Winter Cup, in which -ndian Sage will be ridden by J. Barry. King Abbey had his first schooling task at Riccarton on Saturday morning since his mishap at Timaru in Apm last, and in company with Tigerlami jumped three of the big fences in goon style. The latter went on alone and jumped live more fences. His display
was not impressive. At Riccarton on Saturday, Solferite, Th? Harp, and Red Wink were sent for a good working gallop, the trio finishing in that order at the end of five furlongs. Sir Roseberry is undergoing a course of road exercise at Ellerslie, but is being treated very carefully. Birkenclla, Tuki, Passin’ Through, and Comical arrived at Riccarton on Saturday morning from Wellington. The first-named will be ridden in the Grand National Steeplechase by E. Garrett, who rode him in the Welling ton Steeplechase. The proposed trip with Merry Damon and Serang to Riccarton has been cancelled, owing to the poor form they displayed at the Wellington Meeting. In addition to buying Doleful Ditty at the Wellington Meeting, Mr W Stone, owner of Ecuador, purchased Piton, by Solferino from Dally. The New Zealand horses that arrived in Sydney on Tuesday, says the Sydney “Morning Herald,” of July Sth, put in an appearance at Randwick after -3 breakfast hour yesterday morning. Limerick, who is expected to play a prominent part in the Derbies, is one of the best looking of the party, and none the worse for his trip. The Metropolitan and Cup candidate, Count Ca vour, also impressed local trainers. Both horses were allotted pace work. Other members of the team include i Young Lochinvar, Reonui, Clareina, and Battlement. The contingent is in charge of F. D. Jomes, but his training
oi Count Cavour is temporary. The latter’s mentor, T. H. Gillett, will not arrive in Sydney until after the Grand National Meeting at Christchurch next month. The Spearmint horse Last Dart, is to go to the stud next season. One of his mates will be Mantua, one of the most wonderful mares ever raced in New Zealand. The Solferino marc has never been sound in recent years, but nevertheless continued to win races. Lady Comet was bought as a foal at foot together with her dam at 16gns. She is a great stayer, and could have been a Grand National . steeplechaser nossibly, but was not entered. The imported Joy Bird, who got amongst the winners at Wellington, cost 570gns in England. Mr J. C. N. Grigg is reducing the Longbeach stud and during the Grand National meeting will send several mares and young stock up for sale. It is reported that A. E. Ellis may I steer Fireblight in the Grand National I Steeplechase. Jockey E. Taafc, who has been on a visit to relations at Reefton, left for Trentham on Saturday. At a meeting of the Committee of Ithc New Zealand Metropolitan. Trot.ting Club Friday, Mr A. J. Hast-
ings was appointed starter for the Club’s August Meeting out of twelve applicants. Mr Hastings has starteu with success for the Wellington TiOtting Club and for several years has acted as assistant to the late starter, Mr W. Norman, and, as he possesses the confidence of the riders and drivers, there is every reason to believe that he will prove successful. Hipo Te Monanui, Merry Jest, and Oration are doing easy work and probably will make their appearance at the Taranaki Hunt Meeting. White Fang, who showed such excellent form last autumn, is in training again after a spell. He is said to be looking very well. Some good judges in the north believe Black Cruiser will be hard to beat when he starts over country. He was staying on well over hurdles at T Absurd’s stock has won 2G,ooosovs ‘ h Kin" proved at Trentham that he is a useful sprinter in heavy going. for he finished up his tasks OU I Thursday and Saturday vei-y strong!' and left the impression that he wil. be heard of again-
