BRIGHTER GREYMOUTH.
BOROUGH COUNCIL. Decides to Co-operate. At last night’s meeting of the Bor°ugh Council, the Mayor stated that he thought the proposal for a “Brighter Greymouth Week” was a very’ good scheme indeed. He thought the Council should co-operate with the Power Board in their important function, and make the event one long to be remembered, not only in Greymouth, but everywhere on the West Coast. Cr. J W. Greenslade said that the ceremony would take place in about five weeks. He was with the Mayor in thinking the idea a good one. He was entirely with the “Argus” in boosting the idea of a “Brighter Greymouth.” Cr. J. O’Brien thought that when the lights were turned on the whole place should be lit af. once. It should be the cause of a bg celebration in th G town. It would be a fine thing to get, failing the Prime Minister, the Minister of Public the Hon K. S. Williams to perform the ceremony. The Hon Afinister had never been to Greymouth, and he would probably feel only too pleased to come in his Ministerial capacity on such an auspicious occasion, and on his first visit to this town. Cr. R. J. Williams, in supporting tlie proposal, suggested that as Cr. H. ~F. Doogan had been an original promoter of the electrical scheme and the first chairman of the Power Board, it would be fitting; for him to perform the ceremony of formally switching on the service. Cr. Doogan remarked that, in his opinion, the occasion was one at which a Minister of the Crown should be brought here to officiate. The motion of the Mayor, that the Borough Council confer with the Power Board and the business men of the town and make the occasion one long to be remembered, was seconded by Cr. Perotti, and was carried unanimously.
Prior to the discussion Or Kent remarked that he would like to see a cleaner as well as a brighter Greymouth. He complained of the litte
be seen o P Sunda v mornings outside many business places. (He did not hold with the idea of restoring the crater receptacles for rubbish, owing to the liability to cause fires. He felt that every effort should b© made to brighten and improve the appearance of the town.
