Hawke’s Bay Beaten. BY TARANAKI. BY 5 POINTS to 3. HAWERA, July 7. Playing in fine weather, before an attendance of 6,000, the Taranaki Rugby fifteen defeated Hawke’s Bay by five to three to-day. It was a willing game, dominated mainly by the Taranaki forwards. The majority of Hawke’s Bay’s usual tremendous players were unable to make the trip, and the team was practically a B combination. Gemmell, Mahoney and Wylie (forwards), and Grenside, L. Johnson anti Merdon (backs), were the only first grade Bay players engaged, while five of the remainder made their first representative appearance. With the advantage of the wind, H.ahvke’s Bay opened the first spell with dashing attacks. A passing bout by L. Johnson and Grenside finished in an unconverted try by McDonald. The Hawke’s Bay backs, exploiting the wind, controlled the play for half the spell. The home forwards retaliated, and, keeping the ball close, narrowly failed to score on several occasions. In the second spell, the Taranaki forwards forced the pace, dominating the first twenty minutes.

At half time the score was 18 to nil, but in the second spell, Wanganui forward? J took command. The try-getters foi |Te Ante were Turei (2), and Haig IPotaka converted a try and kicked a I penaltv, while Turei, who ■was the most brilliant player on the field, potted a pretty goal from two yards inside half way. Tries were scored for Wanganui by Moth cl and Ellingham, Bunny converting one try. The junior match was .won by Wanganui by fourteen to eight: ’after a spirited game.

WAIRARAPA v. BUSH. PAHIATUA, July 7. At Rugby to-day, Wairarapa defeated Bush by 21 to 14, in a hard-fought tussle. Wairarapa led by ten to six at half time. Bush later got in front, holding the advantage till near the end, when Parker scored a brilliant solo try, thus saving the day for Wai rarapa. An equal number of tries were scored by both teams, but Fuller s kicking made seven points difference. The Wairarapa backs were superior, but the Bush forwards were more dashing. Tries were scored for Wairarapa by R. Booth, G. Booth, Duff, and Par ker. Fuller converted three tries and kicked a penalty. Tries for bush were scored by Harvey (2), Woolland, and Graham. Udv converted one. Waira rapa were without, the services of Donald and Harvey. The Bush had six of the regular team suffering from injuries in the recent match with Tara naki. HIGH SCHOOL v. CUBIST’S COLLEGE. CHRISTCHURCH, July 7 At Christchurch, the Boys’ High School defeated Christ’s College io the annual Rugby match to-day hy eleven points to six. The half-time score was: School 11. The All Blacks were given a civic reception in the Town Hall. CHANGE IN WEST COAST TEAM. As Burley and'Mosley are not available for the Buller trip, the two emergencies, Shaw (Hokitika) and Nelson (Stars), replace them as forward and five-eighths respectively. Hahn (Hokitika) and Walls (United) are now emergencies. CANTERBURY TEAM. Word has been received by the West Coast Union that definite arrangements have now been made for the Canterbury tour. They play Canterbury on 11th September, Ashburton and South Canterbury at Timaru on September 18th.
