FIXED FOR DECADE. THE TORY POLICY. LONDON, July 6. In the House of Commons on the report stage of the Finance Bill, a Labourite motion for the deletion of the clause providing for the stabilisation of Imperial preference for a period of ten years was defeated by 227 to 114. Mr Churchill in opposing the mot|on, said that they could not bind fy jiire Parliaments. Nor was there anything in the Government’s policy which would prevent any taxes which were the subject of preference being repealed. All that they said was that, as far as they had power to direct the affairs • and the will of the present Parliament . there should be a continuity of the , stability for 10 years He expressed the , opinion that any House of Commons . with the slightest sense of responsible, . ity would be very chary of being in a , hurry to reverse a declaration like this 1 one, made by a previous Parliament. Therefore tho Dominions would be pustified in taking the fullest advantage of the preferences, and doing their utmost to develop the different forms of production which the preferences covered. _ .
