Sir John Hosking, lately of the Supreme Court Bench, is reported to be seriously* ill. Air and Airs R. Colquhon, of Blackball, have returned from an extended holiday in the North Island. At the Racing Conference in Wellington yesterday, Sir George Clifford was re-elected President. His services to racing were eulogised by several delegates. Air G. L. Osborne, who has for five years been district manager of the Government Insurance Department in Greymouth, is to be transferred to Invercargill on promotion. The funeral of the late Robert Smith,, which took place on Tuesday’ afternoon, was largely attended by friends from all parts of the district. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. T. N. Cuttie. Aliss Alexander, school teacher at Roa, who has not been in good health for some time, has been advised by’ her medical adviser to have complete rest. She has left for Christchurch with that object in view. The new managing editor of the “Nelson Evening Mail” is to be Mr F. J. Earle, who was formerly on staff of the N.Z. “Truth.” He has left \\ ellington to take up his new position. Aliss J. Alilner, of the teaching staff of the Cobden School, and formerly’ of that of the Ross School, has been ap- . pointed to the charge of the Lower . Kokatahi School, and will take over her new duties at the end of the present month. L A Press Association telegram from Wellington states that Air. Al. J. Sa- _ vage, ALP., for Auckland West, and ‘ Vice-Chairman of the New Zealand Parliamentary Labour Party, has ; been elected as the Party’s delegate 5 to the Empire Parliamentary Conference in Australia. A painfully sudden death at a Lodge meeting is recorded in a Dune- ■ din telegram stating: When the meeting of the Linden Lodge 1.0.0. F was in progress, one of its prominent i members, Mr. James Pattison, sud- • denly expired. Air. Pattison had just resumed his seat after having given a brief address, when he fel[ back 1 and died immediately. The deceased, who was 76 years of age came to New i Zealand 50 years ago, and settled in t the Kaikorai district. He was a re--1 tired carpenter. Air. Pattison leaves a • widow, two son s and a daughter.
