SHEARERS’ AWARD. PERTH, June 19. Delivering judgment in the case wherein the Australian Workers’ Union asked the Federal Arbitration Court to grant increased wages and improved conditions in the pastoral industries Justice Powers increased the shearing rates from 38/- to 40/- per hundred. Station hands were awarded £2/14/8 with keep, and £4/2/- without.
POST AND TELEGRAPH CHARGES. MELBOURNE, June 19. In the House of Representatives, in reply to a question whether penny postage could not be inaugurated to coincide with the opening of Canberra, the Postmaster-General, Mr Gibson, aid the impracticability of this being done would be seen when he mentioned that since ho came into office, new awards had added a million sterling to the Department’s wages bill. He said that if Australia’s telephone charges were the same as made by the private companies in the United States, the revenue of the Department would be three millions greater than now.
WORKERS’ INSURANCE. SYDNEY, June 19. According to a statement issued by the Accident Underwriters’ Association of New South Wales, rates for insurances under the Woikers’ Compensation Act, 1926, which comes into force on July Ist next, will be at least four times greater than the old rates. The President of the Chamber of Manufacturers (Air Newlands), referring to the i<ew rates, said the increased costs must be offset by every practicable economy. Towards this end, the Chamber was installing i.ts..own X-ray equipment, massage parlours; electrical and hot air treatments, etc., and hopes by this means to protect itself against the malingerer and give every facility to the honest worker to regain normal health as soon as possible.
