MAORI SHEARERS. WANT EALR CONDITIONS. WELLINGTON, Jun© 19. A deputation ~from the Workers’ Union waited on the Minister for Labour, and complained of the quality of the accommodation provided for the Maori shearers, particularly on the East Coast stations. A request was made that inspections, should be made while the shearing was in operation. The deputation asked for the same conditions for the Maoris as given the Pakehas. Mr. Anderson said that a special officer of the Department would be instructed to inspect the East Coast stations before next season’s shearing commenced. An investigation would be held. THE AUSTRALIAN REFERENDUM. SYDNEY, June 19. Although the State officials of the Australian Workers’ Union are unanimous in opposition to the Federal Government’s referendum proposals, the General President of the Union (Senator Barnes) has announced his intention of supporting the referendum on the question of regulation of industry and commerce. The Australian Labour Party suspended the ex-President of the Party. Mr E. C. McGrath, from the position as one of the State representatives of the Federal Executive. Tho charge against him was that he flouted tho orders of the State Executive in not conditionally opposing the referendum proposals at recent meetings of the Federal Executive.
