COAL STOPPAGE TO-DAY.
Expected at Sydney. (deceived May 7 at 9 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 7. to all appearances, the negotiations for a settlement of the mining engineers trouble have finally broken down, and ai general idling of tho coal fields will take place to-morrow. Th e Minister of -Labour had interviews with the colliery proprietors today, also with the Engineers’ representatives during the day. After seeing the Minister, a state, merit was made by the Engineers’ Se, cretary that their ultimatum would not bb withdrawn, and a strike would eventuate to-morrow..
No statement has Been made by the employers, but it is understood that they are not prepared to take any steps to bring about al settlement. They insist the men. must abide by the award. They will again meet the Minister this afternoon to discuss the latest developments.
Meantime a special meeting of such Cabinet ministers as were in town was held to discuss the industrial position. No statement regarding the proceedings was issued, beyond that the meeting was adjourned till Wednesday, when a larger' attendance of Ministers is expected.
