RUGBY FOOTBALL.

UNITED CLUB. .. ANNUAL MEETING. That the strength of the United Football Club this year will at least be equal to that in past seasons, was last night demonstrated by an attendance of over sixty members at the Club’s annual meeting, over which Air J. Guy (President) presided. The annual report wa? read, together with the balance sheet, showing a sound financial position, and was adopted as highly satisfactory. OFFICERS. The election of officers resulted as follows: — Patron, J. D. Lynch, Esq; President, J. Guy, Esq; Vice-Presidents —Messrs A. Adams, T. Scott, W. Scott, A. Matheson, G. Jones, E. 1. Lord, N. Jones, R. WELLINGTON GRADING SCHEME. WELLINGTON, March 30. Although the local Rugby Union decided to institute a grade scheme in senior football, when it came to settling details there was so much conflict of opinion as to the best method, that, it ended in a resolution more or less nullifying the proposal altogether. Those dubs which feared relegation to the second division fought strenuously against any grading, and after a long struggle gained their point to the extent that it was agreed for this season that the A grade should consist of the present senior clubs, and B grade of any others offering. It was immd lately pointed out that, so far from improving the present, unweildy system, this only made it worse, upon which further resolutions were passel that next ye ir A grade should bo lirni.'cd to ton clubs, and B to eight, th? lowest in A to go down into B. Practically the decision of the annual meeting wm shelved for the year. ALL BLACK COOKE. NOT GOING OVER TO LEAGUE. NAPIER, March 30. Approached to-night, Air A. E. Cooke, the All Black centredhreequarter, emphatically denied the statement recently published in England to the effect that he had been offered and had accepted an invitation to join the New Zealand League team to tour England ‘in the coming season. Cooke made it perfectly clear that he had not the slightest, intention of playing the League code. He will continue to play •Kugby, and for the ensuing season, he will play in Hawke’s Bay.
