PLANE CRASHES.
TN AUSTRALIA. OFFICER KILLED. (Recd. Feb. II at 9.30 p.ui.) SYDNEY, Feb. 11. One ut' the Defence Department aeroplanes manned by Flying Officer P. M. Pitt and Observer W. Tl. Challender, while en route from Richmond tu Canberra, in order to carry out a photographic survey of the Murrumbidgee, crashed while manoeuvring for a landing at Canberra, and Pitt was killed instantly, and Challender was seriously injured. The flight from Richmond had been eventless, the machine apparently working perfectly, and covering the 140 flying miles from Richmond to Canberra in good time. Apparently, some mishap occurred and the attenqited landing must have been a forced one. The machine lost altitude gradually and when 150 feet from the earth it nose dived, immediately bursting into flames. Pitt was (lead when reached by the few spectators of the tragedy, and Callender was badly innjured and unconscious. The mnehinv was totally wrecked. Pitt was twenty-seven years old and regarded as a most efficient pilot. Callender is twenty-six. '
