Mr Hiram Hunter arrived from Christchuhch yesterday afternoon. Mrs J. YV. Hannan, of Winnie St., left for Christchurch yesterday morning. Mr I. James. General Manager of the State Mixes, Dunollie, left y-<er-day for Wellington. Mr Fred Smith, of Chapel Street, returned from a holiday visit to Christchurch yesterday. Miss M. Callln arrived by yesterday afternoon’s express from a holiday visit to Christchurch. Mrs A. E. Preston, who has been spending a holiday in Christchurch, returned to Greymouth yesterday afternoon. Mrs C. Allison, formerly of Cobden, and now of Feiiding, is visiting Cobden, and is the guest of Mr and Mrs F, Petherbridge. Mr R. O. Speed. mining engineer, who has been visiting relatives on the West Coast, left yesterday morning < n his return to Siam. A large number of passengers leftfor Christchurch yesterday by the express, among them being Airs and W. Sotheran. Mr N. Kelly', accompanied by Mr Care, of the s.s. Kaitangata, paid a visit to Barrytowu during the weekend. Both gentlemen speak highly ut the scenery en route. Mr George Woods, who was injured in a locomotive accident .it the Aritika sawmill last week, and vho was admitted to the Grey River Hospital for treatme.it. was di -barged from that institution yesterday. Miss Reid, of Blaketow.i, left yesterday for Christchurch, to be present ! at the wedding of Miss Manson, formerly of Otira, to Mr Charier. Stanley Polwick, of Timaru. The ceremony ! will take place at St. Andrew’s Cl.u.cit this morning.
Messrs Dalgety and Co. have just completed two important land sales. One is the well-knowa farm in the estate of the late Mrs Mary Corcoran, the purchaser being Mr William Bruce, of Canterbury. The second property is the farm of the late Mr Hugh McLaughlin, at Totara Flat, which has been purchased by Mr Thomas Loe, of Ahaura. Duri.tg the flood in the Waimakariri a couple of days ago, Mr J. YV. Mackie, a well-known farmer, residing at Kimberley, on the bank of the river, was carried into the stream by a slip when die was letting away storm water, and search parties failed to locate him afterwards. Much sympathy is felt for his wife and family. Mr Mackie had always taken a live interest in the affairs of the Kimberley district. A Press Association message states that a large gathering of members of Cabinet, Members of Parliament, and others, yesterday, witnessed a presentation to Sir Maui Pomare, Min.-' T in Charge of the Cook Islands, of a silver loving cap and gold mount'd cocoanut, as a 1 expression of the islanders’ esteem and gratitsde an.' appreciation for what the Minister had dene for them. Miniatures of the loving cup were presented to Lady ami Miss Pomare. The function was of a private character, the Prime Minister making the presentation on behalf of the Islanders, who forwarded a letter expressing the people’s thankfulness to Sir M. Pomare for the many acts of consideration and regard he had shown for their welfare generally.
