WELLINGTON, August 7. A large deputation. represnntnip the New Zealand Licensing Reform Association, waited on the Prime Minister this morning. Archdeacon Wil I liams, Dominion President, urged that I the Government should carry out th. promise made to Mr Massey in 1921 | that Parliament would deal wit': . licensing legislation. The Association I had decided to oppose candidates who' acknowledged themselves bound to tin New Zealand Alliance. Canon Janie; (Auckland) forwarded claims to cor porate control and urged the retention of the third issue on the ballot I paper. On behalf of the Moderate' I.eague. Mr W. Perry urged that America was not a good example of prohibition. The cause of unfavour able features surrounding the lieensii a system of New Zealand were insecurity of tenure, fictitious values, lack oi departmental control, and limited powers of licensing committees. Representatives of the wholesale trade, the New Zealand Licensed Victuallers’ Association, and the Associated Clubs oi New Zealand also spoke against Prohibition and urged the Government to introduce legislation at once. Mr Coates, in reply, stated that the Government would introduce legislation, but he could not promise that the bill would come down this session. The matter was before Cabinet.
