Young Tories Turn Radical
THE CAPITAL LEVY IDEA AT WORK. CUT IN DIVIDENDS ADVOCATED (Received August 6 at 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, August 5 The debate on unemployment in the House of Commons was remarkable for the outspoken speeches made by several young Conservaii ives. Mr. Victor Cazelct, a wealthy Tory backbencher, who recently was -f captain in tiie Household Cavalry, advoc«ted( tha,t tJioj Cabinet members and members of Parliament should voluntarily sacrifice Lve per cent of their own salaries, and that thos« earning more than one hundred per cent above the pre-war standard, should sacrifice ten per cent, but that thi s cut should not be applied to the miners and the agricultural workers, who were paid far too little. He declared that dividends should be [limited to five or six per cent cn the present price of the shares, and that th e additional profit should bo devoter.l to the devclclpmenfi of the country.
Mr. Cazclet supported Mr. J. P. Clynes in a sharp attack upon luxury spending, but- lie recalled the fact that an unfortunate man with live or six unmarried daughters may tmd it economical, and not a luxury, to give a party.
