MOA BONES

A FIND AT SUMNER. CHRISTCHURCH. August 3. Men wh> were engaged in putting down water pipes near the tennis courts at Sumner, unearthed several large Mon bones, about three feet below the surface, close to the foieshore. Mr. E. •!. Haynes, Taxidermist nt the Canterbury Museum, coilecf.'d from the deposit six large leg bones. ( Their length and thickness show that they belonged to a gigantic species of moa, which stood about twelve feet high. Three of the bones, belonging, apparently to one leg. have n total length of about five feet five inches, exclusive of the toes, which have not been found. The bones have been added to the extensive collection of Mon bones in the museum. A search will be made for fu’ther bones at the same place.
