SHOCKING FATALITY

MAN KILLEDD

BY EEWANUI TRAIN.

ACCIDENT AT GREYMOUTH STATION.

A shocking fatality occurred on Saturday night at the Greymouth Railway Station, just as the Hcwanui train was departing, about 9 o’clock. Mr Paul Bromilow,. a resident of the State Collieries district, who had for some minutes been standing tit the station in conversation, {(waiting the train’s departure, did not go aboard before it started. When he did go to enter a carriage, he missed his footing, and fell upon the rail, where the back bogie wheel of the carriage passed over his body, causing frightful mutilation. Before, however, another wheel reached him, the train had been brought to a sudden stop through the prompt action of coaching foreman Adkin, who had got aboard the guard’s van and applied the emergency brake. When extricated it was at once evident that the unfortunate man was past all human aid, he. having sustained a large abdominal wound, exposing the intestines and right thigh-bone, whilst his right arm, which had been entangled in the brake rod, was broken in several places. He remained alive for a brief space, and showed he was conscious by replying to questions as to his name, and uttering the word “Paul,” his Christian name. The deceased, who was a native of England, came to the West Coast last Novem ber from Avoca. He was a single man, thirty-five years of age, and has several relatives in New Zealand, his brother, Mr John Bromilow being a resident of Runanga, to whom the sympathy of many friends will be extended in his sudden and tragic bereavement. An inquest will be held at noon to-day, a.id the funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon.
