IN HOUSE OF COMMONS. The British I’arliummitary Labor party took advantage of the First o f 3!tiy r ior a most impressive demonstration in the British House of Commons. Just on that day a private member’s bill, introduced by G. Buchanan, and dealing with tile ratification of the Washington Convention on the Eight Hours Day, came up for discussion. The debate developed into a worthy’ declaration of the great, claim of the international working class for an inernationallv gu ■ Eight Hours Day. Amongst the,. Labor speakers supporting the motion wore David Kirkwood and Ton| t Shaw, Minister of Labor in MacDonald’s Cabinet, and now again secretary, of the Labor ami Socialist International. Shaw reminded lie House that a former capitalist Government pledged itself to ratify’ he Washington Convention. The
pledges given to the workers during tire war hail not been honoured. > “There is n () class to whom we have kept our war promises, but the lenders of money, and'they’ have been kept Iwo- three or four times over.” Concluding his speech, Shaw drew attention to the fact that, for the past 35, years, workers have demonstrated' on May I ,Day in favor of an Eight Hours Day’. The Conservative Government opposed the bill, and the House rejected it by 223 votes to 128.
