luR FRED FOLEY. B is no exaggeration to sav that Mr I-'r.-d Eolcy is ~f ( | lr ni ,, s ; versatile artists that has occupied the boards of a colonial vaudeville stage, and last night he gave further proof of his versatility, when he entertained a large audience in tin l Town Hall for Upwards of an hour and a half. His entertainment was divided into fo'ir portions- illusion, chalk talks, shadowgraph}' ami ventriloquism. Dressed in Oriental garb, ami amidst an appropriate setting. Mr Foley presented a number of very clever tricks, the neatest of all, perhaps, being the production of :• pair of ducks in a tub of water. The vessel was placed upon the stage in full view of the audience, •and was then filled with water. A New Zealand Hag was then stretched across it, ami a revolver shot was fired, and the ducks flew mil quacking. The trick only occupied, a few seconds from beginning to end, the swiftness with which it was ' presented being not the least of the clever features about it. Another illusion that in which the performer “swallows” a packet of needles. A yaid of cotton is similarly treated, and :s afterwards drawn from the mouth, with each of the needles (about a dozen in number) suspended bv the eyes. This is certainly one of tin cleverest tricks seen on the local stage for many a long day, ami was worthy of the lend applause which reward'd it. Not the least enjoyable portion of Mr Foley's entertainment was his chalk talks, in which he revealed suipri-’iry skill as a caricaturist and artist. His hand shadowgraphy is also distinctly clever and amusing. As a veniiilo quist, Mr i'oley is ns bright and entertaining as of yore. His doll Cos ter .Toe” is a droll character. and this part of his entertainment which consisted of witty cross-talk, and i ie inevitable gagging kept the 1 in a simmer of merriment. oni„i 1 there will be a change of programme. L The first half of the evening vas L, nkon up by a six-reel picture XXatch I Your Step,” in which Richard Tai lm-idge was starred. It dealt with the Eiffieulties of a young couple and ■rough path they had to tread before

■ ! the girl’s father would consent to the | marriage. Of course, the difficulties I they found themselves in provided I many humorous situations, which were I made the most of by the actors. This picture will be screened for the last ptime to-night
