WESTPORT NOTES.

WESTPORT, June 26. Jack Kilkenny is getting another big motor bus, a ten-seater. This is rendered necessary on account of the increasing business doing with his Westport-Seddonville Service. The Westland Shop Assistants’ Union, Westport Branch, held their ordinary meeting on Tuesday evening at the Labour Party’s room, Mr. C. Bell presiding. The conduct of an employer in underpaying an employee was debated upon, and it was resolved to ask the head office to allow the employee to sue him on nis own behalf, the union to support him financially. It was urged that the Labour .Department was a kind ol ’ Kathleen M avourneen” department (•‘it may be for years and it may be forever,”) and that a little direct action was preferable to waiting so long. An employer might get out ot business during the wait. The matter of the “Argus” was under review, members stating that the sparsity of Westport news made it necessary to purchase two papers, aiel a resolution was to be forwarded to J Headquarters advising an energy; ie canvas being made of Westport a> this being election year, the workershould do their level best to make the ‘ ‘ Argus’* the educative medium h is supposed to be by getting it into every toilers home. The Secretary reported upon th e success of a >r:p round the mining iownships, every employee coming under the- award 'icing a member of the Union, and t.hi.-, in face of the fact that it. is practically impossible for these memb<‘iH to attend a meeting. There was this evening evidence of fine union spi: pervading the mining districts, and if a similar spirit was exhibited in West port they should soon have those who were sheltering behind a danse in the Arbitration Court Awaru, which enables employees who were m employ before the Award came into force to partake of the auv::u.ages secured by the Union, wilho contributing to cost of same. <, i tainlv there were, only two business places where this is occurring and the; must live in hopes of their repentance. Altogether the meeting v. a - a fine one. Miss A. Holland, daughter of <e.i Member ’arrived in Wellington on Wednesday, alter spending an extend cd holiday in .Melbourne, Sydncx a,.. Brisbane. Sexeral la’ties volunteered to canvass the, town on the block system to collect the supper and to sell tickets. Messrs R. MeDonagh and D. Moloney were appointed joint secretaries. Weasels are a post at some of the fowl yards in this district . Fowls have' been found dead in the yards while eggs are being eaten. Another real pest is the seagull, a local loxvl yard owner informed your correspondent I that he saw seagulls come down into J the yard in the morning and pick up, duck eggs from the ground in their! bills, and lly off with them. On Wednesday evening Mr lend Mrs Sam Paul, proprietors of the Club Hotel, celebrated the 25th anniversary of their wedding, when a large number of friends assembled to honour the occasion. Mrs Paul was presented with some ha'iidsome presents. A. dainty supper was served in the dining room, and dancing was held in the now Commercial room of the Hotel, Croy’s orchreslra supplying the music. Rresh cream can now be procured daily at Patterso»n’s Apple Shop. The cream is from the farm of Mr MeLelland. Sergeant’s Hill. Its freshness and purity need no boosting up. Every can is sealed before leaving the dairy, n’.’id patrons can depend on being able to procure the freshest and choicest of cream. T’he Denniston school boys piny a football match against St. Canice’s School on Victoria Square this morning, and in the afternoon they will play the State School. The visitnng team from the Hill are looked upon by the town lads as good sports and when the town teams visit the Hill they are always treated witth the greatest hospitality . Mr (hiIT Thomas, of ginger beer fame, has just bid farewell to the horse as the medium for carting his wares. He has a lorry now doing the good work, the body of which was built by Mclntyre Bros., a local firm. I am not sure if this is the first of the kind built by a local firm but the Mclntyres must be congratulated on the job that they have turned out.
