ALARMING INCREASE TN OLD COUNTRY. LONDON. June 16. Latest unemployment figures are disquieting. The registered nnmner of persons unemployed is 1,291,000. being 104,672 more than a fortnight ago, and 263.685 more 'than a year ago. DEMONSTRATIONS PROJECTED LONDON June 17. Izabour members asked the Government tor facilities to discuss the unemployment, and also for organis ing demonstrations throughout the country on the 21st of June. BRITISH INQUIRY. MOST WOULD NORMALLY BE WORKING. LONDON, Juno 19. The Ministry of Labour has made an interesting investigation into the per. soual circumstances and industrial h s. tory of typical cases among ten sand claimants for ’inemployed benefits. It is found that 62 per cent, of the men, and 77 per cent, of the women would normally be in steady cm. ploymen t. There are only 3$ per cent of the men and 1] per cent of women verging upon the unemployable, and these aro mainly elderly people, and in poor health. Of the unemployed men, 23 per cent, have been trained, while 54 per cent, have neither been apprenticed nor trained. There arc 67 per cent, of the men and 73 per cent, of the women in good health.
