RAILWAY CLERK’S 'I HEFTS. WANGANI'I. June L. Ai Jie Magistrate’s Court at V/avcrlev to-day, ; * li Y.’isnhk v pleaded guilty to failing to account lu file Railway Department for Hi'* sum of £‘ss. Accused, who bad been employed at, Wavcrlcy station for tic* past, four years, had been in I lie habit of making out freight accounts and adding additional items to them. Those items were not recorded on ilm duplicates of these accounts, nor in any of the Departmental books Wben the accounts were paid It clients, accused pocketed the extra money. AMALGAMATION OF CLUBS . . NOT RELISHED AT GISBORNE. GISBORNE. .Tune 17. At the annual meeting of Hie Poverty Bav Turf Club, the (’hairman, Mr J. AV. Nolan, stated in his address that the Dates Committee of the Racing Conference desired the amalgamation of the Club with the Gisborne Racing Club. After discussion, a motion was passed that the Turf Club do not consider the time opportune for i amalgamation. i

Orpington breeds were all numerously represented. Mrs Shingles’ s' \\ kite Leghorn cockerel was the champion bird. Very good specimens of -ducks were on exhibition, though the number was not very large. Ths fact that no fewer thafii 70 motor cars were required to transport the. Show patrons from Hokitika, Greymouth, and other places to Kokatahi yesterday indicates the growing popularity of this winter show fixture, which next year should command exhibits from a wider areathan over. The Judges were: Poultry, Mr A B. Spiers, Kumara-; farm produce, Mi- Palmer. Rotomanu ; dairy produce. Mr Seymour; home cookery. Mr G. Harker, Greymouth ; schools and fancy work. Mrs Urquhart. Hokitika. THE FORMAL OPENING.. i lie ioi iiiai opening <»i die 50.).. Ia«»K place \ euierdaty altei noou, wuen die Uoiiniy Cnaiiman of Westland, ..ir R. Chestcrmaii, performed that lunclioiq and addresses were given rn the occasion to a packed gamer mg. Mr Tom O’Neill, Piesidcnt oi m< Show Executive, said it was a great pleasure to them all io see the sue (less of 'their fourth W inter Show, ,and to all w ho had helped w i-t.li il, h,- wished | ( > return the ( ommit.lee’s hearty (hanks. The Show was of great benetii to iTietr own district, as il showed the farmers themselves, as well as imir visitors, whait, great things their son was capable of producing. Relative!, to the area i’t represented, the Sh- w compared most favourably w.tli an\ other show held in th<- coiiiitr 1 . . Th quality was equal to any. if ih< quaid.il y W as Hot. I ‘ • 'I e). 11. then called on the M- inker fm m District to say a few wo'dx. .Mr Jas. O'Brien, M P.. said must thank the Show oi their kind invitation to be pre.e ’t.o address them, and especially isee th<- really wonderful d'spiay ol their produce, which had open<H! lueyes indeed. Me too, had seen show in other places, but did not Jecolleil { seeing anywhere sii«h a fine arm;., for a. district such as llicirs, espoeiallv of root products. h coidirmeu his conviction thaH. there was tn st<-.re for the West (’oast farmer a wondoi ' fu’d’utere. provided he could go! I from the Government that degree .>1 | assistance which he deserved. i> j.f I ger shows than this he had seen wire not. as good, and he was convinced ' I,ho district wanted only adequate hacking from the Govornmen'. to r;\ d Taranaki. When hr had said in Parlirunient that the West Coast could rival Taranaki, the late Prune M nisicr had denied this, hut if he saw ihe produces there shown, In* would see evidence to substantiate the claim. When they saw even the pa kihi lands made l<> produce good root (fops, they knew what great prospects there were. I he speaker paid a high tribute to the spirit of co-op-oratii-n which ihe farmers of the cusjtrict had shown, not only in dairy production, but in building their public hall by co-operative labour, and m conducting their show jl-.e--wi.-e. Co-operation was a print iplo that was capable of anything ai ail, and no other way was <<iua! to r, in promoting New Zerdand's progress. At present, he said, c,;j-oper;'tion was needed in the Dominion more than anything else. lhe\ were Lheie showing the people a example, UH( ] he wished heartily io congratulate them all, the ladies, the committee, the exhibitors, and the other helpers <>u their efforts. Hon. H. L. Michel said tlils showhad grown t<> big dimensions Horn a very humble beginning, and he eongratulaited the promoters on what ,vats a credit I<> the district, a show which, as the- previous speaker and remarked, compared well with the shows in larger (entres. As a commercial man he was specially interested, and ho claimed the ham and bacon display cquailled in quality tha-h ut Palmerston North or any ohtcr large shew. The home exhibits also were admirable, showing the industry a.nd ability of the housewives and their daughters. The settlers musrt, not undcr-estiiiiatc the value of these shows. While Mr O-Brien had remarked thait. the late Mr Massey did not. think the Coast, could rival Taranaki the speaker had heard Mr Mas- • sey'say at Kokadalii that the land there equalled that of Taranaki, or anv dtt,her locality. Tli<> settlers were proving this. The late Mr ScdiTon had forecasted Kokatahi’s prosperity, ;in d bad foretold the present chmme from the days when the farmers there bad no market for the produce (hex tried indusJ.rially to sell. fh'A had advantages, however. in the form of plenty of firewood and hme which other districts lacked. Nov else would* finer specimens be found. The show had a groat educational value, as people from all parts came ;;<nd learned what their land could produce. They did m»-h vet realise the capabilities of West Coast soiß. but if its lessons were lea.med, it would moan for them a |""elit fnfvrn. He rnncrraiidnto'l H> > on ’Vs excellent show. Mr T. E. Y. tfiiG From a humble start there had been a vast! improvement. He specially congratulated Koiterangi on its victory over Kokatahi in its most creditable Court, which showed K.hc rare diversity of the products of that locality. The Show inspired an emulation that would produce better exhibits. It was regrettable that- ihe Dairy Herd Record was not avaued of by local dairy farmers, because heir records proved valuable for Targnaki and other daiirying districts, Ho referred to the excellent poultry exhibits, and specially montipned the Game breeds, which stood for spirit, whilst other breeds stood for utility. He thanked them >j’ the opportunity to say a few .voids, and again congratulated them on the show. which he hoped to see bettered next year. Air R. Chesterman, County Chairman, after complimenting the district on its display, which was second to none, and after also compb mentiaig the lady exhibitors in par ticiular, said ho had great pleasure in declaring- 'the Show open.
