WINTER SHOW

AT KOKATAHI High Grade Foodstuffs SPLENDID ROOT EXi 11B: IS. To the valleys of Kokaiahi and KoiteramgL (the former one of the earliest to be settled on the West Coast) must go the balm for producJrig the finest all-round variety ol root crops in Westland, a fact whicu was strikingly demonstrated at the fourth annual Winter Show of the dis-triets in question yesterday. Probably no collection of foodstuffs previously seen on the Coast equalled that arrayed on this occasion at th® Kokatalu Public Hall. The Show opened on Tuesday, when the judging was carried out, and yesterday was People’s Day. The attendance proved a* record, and the President of »the Show Committee, Mr Tom O’Neill, in his opening address, re marked >*t,hat the door proceeds of close on U-50. were over thirty per cent, better J han those of the pre vious Show. To the Secretary, Mr H. A. B'xldington, great credit is due for the excellent way in wh’ch the exhibition was arranged and conducted. he being the right man in the right place. As an exhibitor, he also played a leading part, gain-ng the special prize for the most points gained in all sections. Mr O’Neill (President), Mr O- AmJ)crger (Vi<NPresident), also worked hard to make kite display a success, as also did the Executive Committee, Messrs J. Fleming, D. Smith, P. Jones, V» • O’Reilly, T. Ecclesfield, E. Cron, J. Monk, L. H. Morel, C. Hendie, W. Jones. Great work was also done by the Ladies Committee, Mesdaanes Cron, Fleming, Smith. Jones’ Boddington ,Monk, Morel, Dowell, Amberger. O’Reilly, Ecclesfield. A special word of praise is due to Mrs Fleming for her conduct of the tearooms, where she and her willing assistants attended to the wants of hundreds in capital style throughout the afternoon As to the exhibits, an outstanding feature was the display of Swede tur nips by Mr Noah Harris, of Koka»tahi. Nothing so good has ever be fore seen cn the Coast, the quality of the turnips being of The finest, and the size also good. This root feed is of special importance on the Coast, where dairying is so general and Mr Harris deserves every com mendation for his enterprise. K? may, in part, owe tfts success to ent ideal winter weather conditions this year, but care and judgment were needed to produce such a fine tex ture and such freedom from “soap iness.’’ Mr Ferguson also exhibited some first class Swede turnips, grown at Ferguson's, South Westland. The display of marigolds was generally good. Under Wesit, Coast A. and P Association auspices, there was a *very attractive array ot turnips and other vegetables, chiefly from the schools, including those at Hukarere, Ikamatua, Nelson Creek, Inchbonnie, Taylorville, Camerons, Kumara Junction, Blue Spur, Hokitika, fxukatahi. Ross and Koiterangi. lit. was remarked tiiat the Imperial Green Globe turnips in this collection were a good advertisement for the Coast lands, and the white carrots and marigolds were also very nne. Mari-

golds grown on pakihi land were shown by Mr Perring, of Kumara Junction, and they were a revela o ion of tlie possibilities of this kind of country. The ham and v bacon section was a good one, not stinted in exhibits, but the outstanding display was that ot Mr Fleming (chairman of the Koaatahi Dairy Coy. Directors), who took first prizes and specials tor smoked side of bacon, smoked ham, green roll of bacon, and green ham. and second for green side of bacon. The pig-raising industry has a good future on the Coast, and men like Mr Fleming are paving the way for others to follow on nhe route to prosperity’. Mr J. Monk was a prolific exhibitor, both of butter and bacon, gaining the pride nf nlane in D dairy produoe section. The large hall yesterday proved too small for the exhibition, in uhnli stood out it.wo district bays, representing Kokaitahi and Koiterangi res-

pectively. Root crops (food for man and beast), poultry, pork. game, home made preserves, cookery, and a wide variety of other products of the two valleys were all represented m the ‘two bays. The prize, went to Koiterangi, which certainly deserved it as the output of a farm was most completely represented in its bay. There was only one farmers’ bav, but this made an excellent ; ..owing, and contained a wonderfully complete representation of the output- of a farm. There is a nice showing of apples and vegetables, while the cookery and home made preserves did great credit to the housewives of the district. The whole \\ est Coast was represented, exhibits coming from Karamea in the north, down to Wataroa in the south. In the juvenile section of cookery, the quality was in some instances equal to that ot the open classes, th ejudge paying a special tribute to this section. dn* fancy work also had its many admirers, while the paintings in oil ”” water colour and other school dm' ren’s entries were worthy of tne sneoinl attention received. am< crm ’
