YIP BOR’S EXCUSE FOR DEBT. \ well known Chinese resident of Grcymouthr, Yip Bor, figured as <i“ fondant in a claim at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning, before Dlr W. Mcldruni, S.M., when he was sued by Messrs Park, Davis and Coy., the well-known Christchurch firm of fruiterers, tor the sum of £3l 5s lor goods supplied. Mr W. “too poor.” He did not have a fruit business now. At this stage defendant’s remarks became very indistinguishable, but. from what could be gathered, lie stated (hat he had a tailor’s shop in Mr McCarthy: A tailor’s shop? Do you mean a laundry? Def-: No. nothing. Mr McCarthy: Nothing? What are you doing for a living then? Deft:: Nothing. Mr McCarthy; Y’ou must be doing something. How are you going to live you are doing nothing? Deft: I don’t know. Mr McCarthy: Well, if you don’t know. I am sure I don’t. Deft’s comprehension of counsel’s questions then appeared to become more hazy, and it was agreed to call in tho aid of an interpreter. This procedure made things easier for the bench and counsel and Deft alike, to say nothing of the reporters. Proceeding with his examination counsel asked defendant when he could pay the debt. Deft answered that he had no money and could not get arwork. He was paying £S l-'s 4d month for rent.
