WESTPORT NOTES.
(Our Owo Correspondent.) WESTPORT, May _’S. Harry Lauder arrived in town on i Wednesday afternoon, and at (> p.m. a banquet was held in the Elite Tea Rooms to welcome Sir Harry and Lady Lauder to Westport. There wore about fifty guests present. Chief S. Strachan, of the Buller Caledonian Society, presided, and seated at his left wore the guests of the evening and lion W. Mclntyre, while at his right. I were the Mayor, Mr ,T. Menzies, and Mr Holland M.P. for Buller. Mr J. Caulluni sang li Hurrah for the Highlands.” and Mr J. Duncan sang ‘‘'Hail Caledonia.” Mrs MeWha provid'd at the piano. Several speeches of welcome were made, and the Scotch comedian was eulogised by the sneakers. In reply. Sir Harry Lauder paid a great tribute to the lovely scenery of the Buller Gorge. It was the grandest thing he had seen since he left home, and ho trusted to hear of songs being composed about this wonderful place. He said he was a devoted fisherman with hook and rod, but lie heard that they caught, trout in the Buller with dynamite! At the Victoria Theatre later, the building was well packed to hear the concert, and in front of the hall forty motor_cars from the country were lined up and formed quite a J avenue in themselves. ________ i
