FROM AMUNDSEN Believed to be Good News (Received May 28 at 9.5 p.m.) (Copyright. LONDON. May 28. A wireless message from the ‘Fram’ at Spitzbergen, despatched on Wednes<l:iv at 5 p.m., states: — “Message received here from Oslo wirelessly announce that the American Press is taking a pessimistic view of the result of Captain Amundsen’s flight and that there are plans to despatch relief; but from Amundsen’s plans there is no reason to doubt that the flight will have a happy conclusion. Like the rest of the world, we are ou the tiptoe of excitement, and we expect momentarily to see the planes appearing from over Amsterdam Island, but n$ one at present is anxious, as we frequently have heard Captain Am. undseji and his colleagues say that they would possibly be several days tn route. We should Lave expected them back <n the first day, if they ha 1 not found a Landing place at the Pole, but as they have not returned we are agreed that a 1.-nding place has been found either at the Pole, or nearb*. . In the latter evert the airmen wou'd be compelled to use skis. According to Amundsen, the ’.ivestigations and •observations would likely be prolonged on both the outward and the homeward journeys WEATHER STELL GOOD. LONDON, May 28. A wireless from the “Fram” on Wednesday afternoon states: There is nothing to report except that the good weather at Spitzbergen and in the Po. lar basin is maintained. It seems certain that the low pressure centred on Russia has been deflected eastwards. THE RETURN JOURNEY. PROBABLY VIA ALASKA. (Received May 28 at 8.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, May 28. Mrs Vera Prentice, a sister of Mr Ellesworth. who is accompanying Captain Amundsen says that the Party had no intention of returning to Spitzbergen, but would fly to Alaska, and, if possible, inarch down to civilisation, possibly not arriving till the autumn of next year. THE CHIEF OBSTACLE. PLANES FROZEN IN Received. May 28th. nt 7.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 27. Experts here point Ont that Atnnnd.. sen’s difficulties must have begun when his machines alighted on the surface of the ice, where they would be quickly and securely frozen into the pack ice. How then, it is asked, will Amundsen liberate an aeroplane weighing tons.
Algarsson’s airship is now being fitted out at Liverpool. She may yet succour Amundsen, if the letter’s pro. verbial good luck holds ont.
