AUCKLAND TRAKIJC BY-LAW. AUCKLAND, April 21. In defiance of the City Council’s new by-law which prohibits motor buses in Queen Street, and which came into force to-day, practically all vehicles owned by the various private companies continued throughout the day to ply for hire within the prohibited area. The main street presented the usual congested scene, with 'bases running up and down, the only vehicles that were missing being the City Council’s own conveyances, the Kohirnarama services and a few others which ran from their termini From 7.30 a.m. traffic inspectors were posted at the qorner of Wellesley Street and at the Customs Street inter section, and they had not been there many minutes before they realised that they were going to have a busy mottling. It was quite surprising the large number of idlers who had at that early hour found it convenient to gather at Customs street corner to watch developments. Keeping their usual time-tables the 'buses came on the scene, their drivers obviously ignoring the by-law, probably acting under instructions from their employers, and no doubt emboldened by the knowledge that the new rule was to he contested in the Supreme Court. The inspectors immediately exercised their authority and, as each 'bus came along, it was , held up and the names and addresses of the drivers, t,_. gether with tho license numbers of vehicles and other necessary details, were entered upon official note books which filled rapidly. Those drivers who were interrogated by the officers and who, despite instructions signified their intention of staying in Queen Street, were recorded as having committed the further of fence of disobeying the inspector's orders. ’ While those operations were in progress the idlers at the corner cheered and jeered intermiti* *Jy, their sympathies being obvious’- with the. ‘bus men. •
