OPIUM CATCH

MELBOURNE, April 6. Opium valued at £lOOO was seize] by a large force of plainclothes con stables and detectives from Russell St. last night. Houses occupied by Chinese in East Melbourne, Carlton and Hawthorn were visited by batches of detectives and constables, who thoroughly searched for the drug. Tn some cases the police had to batter the doors down with axes in order to gain admission. Four Chiu i sc were taken to the city watch-house and detained. It bad been learned by the police that quantities of opium wore being smuggled into Australia on incoming vessels from China, Japan and America.
