WESTLAND RACING CLUB

AUTUMN TO PROSPERITY Caverock Wins Hurdles The weather conditions yesterday were most unfavourable for the Westland Racing Club’s Annual autumn meeting. Heavy showers fell on the previous night, and yesterday morning, and materially affected the attendance. The going was heavy, and followers of form found the task of picking -winners difficult, with the result that some good dividends were registered during the day. Many of the events provided keen excitement, especially the Easter Hurdles, which was undoubtedly one of the best contests over the sticks that has ever been witnessed on the West Coast, and Caveroek’s fine performance was greet-

ed with an ovation, tho win being a most popular one. The big Taco was robbed of much interest, through Viewpoint, who was a hot favourite bursting a blood vessel during the race. The starting was excellent throughout tho meeting, and Mr Butland is to bo congratulated on getting his fields away well, under unfavourable condi tions. The attendance was much larger than on the corresponding day last year, and the Secretary and officials of the Chib worked untiringly towards catering for the comfort, of the public. Tho appointments were first class, and proceedings were enlivened by the presence of the Hokitika Band, which rendered an excellent musical programme. The totalisator handled £6,264 compared with £5,821 on tho corresponding day of last year, an increase of £443. Following are the results and details of the racing:— TRIAL H/YNDTCAP of 7b sovs; six furlongs: — 2 Mr AV. S. Clark’s Prince Charleroi (General Latour—Alicia) b g aged 7.11 (•!. W. The racing was on tho quiet side, but TToroie was the unpleasant surprise of the day. After his dismal failure in tho All Aged Stakes to-day. ho was again the popular favourite in tho Cumberland Stakes, butf ho finished last. On his Doncaster showing. (By “Cheer Up. ”1 Athos made a sorry exhibition of the field in the Dominion Hack Trot yesterday by winning comfortably from the 144 yards mark. There must have been some mistake in the rumour that he had broken down. Some Ahlvey was the outsider of the field in the President’s Handicap, and she returned her supporters a liberal dividend. The Quin Abbey filly was nicely handled by A. G. Rowlands, and she should salute the judge again before the next two meetings of the circuit are concluded. Probate hasn’t broken it yet, but she’s going to. Espada put iu a good run in the High Weight Handicap, and finished in third place. She handled the soft going pretty well, and may be worth noting in the next few days. Lord Nagar’s exhibition in the Easter Hurdles yesterday proves that he is fast becoming a light of other days. The Great Easter Handicap was note worthy for the fact that the brother and sister Siaosi and Civility ran first and second in a great finish. The winner and runner-up are both by Elysian from Civilisation, by Maori King from New Idea by the New Zealand Cup win ner Waiuku from Bonnie Idee. Red Wink has been one of the most consistent horses racing this season, as in fifteen starts he has won seven races, been placed second five times, and been unplaced on only three occasions. All Red. who won the Auckland Cup in 199.8 and 1909, died a few days ago as a result of a ehill. Tn the Champagne Stakes at Rie carton, coming into the course proper. Chignon and Ninicompoop had a sligh* advantage of Black Cat. and looked as if they would win easily, for Black Cat was rather wide out, and thus earlv was being kicked up to her work. But the daughter of Mascot was full of courage, and sticking to her work, she first caught Nincompoop, who did not answer generously to his rider’s i strenuous efforts, and struggling on she caught Chignon at the distance post, and from there on the race was hers. Tt was a well deserved win, for it , was gained by sheer gameness.
