A.S.R.S. AND ALLIANCE OF LABOUR. CORRESPONDENCE WITH DEPARTMENT. WELLINGTON, February 25. The Minister of Railways stated that, as the result of statements which appeared in the daily press to the effect that Air Al. J. Alack was present at the annual meeting of ilm Alliance of Labour, representing the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, a communication was addressed to the General Secretary of lhe Society, asking’ whether the report was correct. A reply has been received intimating that the Society’s attitude is correctly explained in its letter of May 16 last, land that the Society lakes m. 1 esponsild li t y for any newspaper re ports, which would appear to convey a different impression. The letter referred to staled that lhe Executive had taken action to cancel its affiliation with the Alliance of Labour, and also undertook that ii would not again affiliate during its term of office. The same executive was in office when the meeting of the Alliance was held last month. The Society was advised in reply to its letter, that so far a< the Government was concerned. it would not countenance any departure from the definite terms under which recognition was accorded the Society. If ever the Society again contravenes the agreement by affiliation with any outside organisation, the Government would withdraw its recognition of the Society. CHARTERED SHIPS DISPUTE. MELBOURNE, February 26. The Trades Ball Dispute Committee and the Maritime Unions have arranged a. conference with the management of the Commonwealth T.ine In Sydney to discuss a settlement of lhe chartered ships dispute. Working men members opposed the latter motion and urged that, the subject should not bo ro-opened. hut after a discussion, the motion was carried by a huge majority. One speaker xvas cheered when he declared: "I wish the Government would give us a lead on this question. If it does not ’we will give them all the lead necessary."
