j PRICE LOWER AT NAPIER. NAPIER, January 14. The wool sales opened, this morning, when a catalogue comprising 25,000 bales was submitted to full benches. The price early showed no disposition to reach the heights achieved at the earlier sales, but remained firm on those recorded at the recent: Wanganui sale. Uu to noon, prices had shown a general all-round decline of a penny per pound on the prices at the preceding Napier sale. The decline occasion- | ally went as far as two pence, but for * necks and attractive lots, higher I figures were obtained. The range of buyers ‘operating seemed larger than at previous sales. Bidding was brisk. FURTHER DETAILS. XAIMER, January 14. At the third wool sale of the season in Napier to-day, the catalogue was of 25,169 bales, offered to a large bench <sf buyers. Competition was confined almost mitirelv to Bradford and the Continent. There was practically no competition from America., while very few New Zealand mills were able to j operate, and th' 1 local fellmongers were j completely out of it. | The sale showed that good wools were ; being neglected for teh lower grades. I Good to super wools, on •which the bidding was very slack and erratic, were down from pentiv to lid per lb on last Napier sale, but a.s far as the lower grades wcr-- concerned, they were from par to |d better. Pieces, bellies, and necks sold exceptionally well. 'rimi'c was a good demand for high grade lambs’ wool for which good prices vo'i’e obtained, .although these were erratic. Five rams offered by Mr Hewitt, a\eraged 110 guineas, while 15 Penrose (Mr \V. Perry's) Romneys averaged 75 guineas. 'l'he highest, price in the latter offer- ; >g w.is 157 guineas. Lmeolns and female Romneys were neglected. SALES IN AUSTRALIA. SYDNEY, January 13. At the wool sales, merino sorts were firm i xeopting super, which was Mill five to 71. per cent. below the December levels. Crossbreds were irregular. with weaker tendency. Yorkshire. Japanese and German buy- , ers were active. /MELBOURNE, January 14. At the wool sales prices for merinos compared with December sales showed a. depreciation of 5 per cent, and supers 7 A per cent.
