BENZINE DEPOT

CONSTRUCTED IN GI’.EYMOUTTT The big benzine depot, at the <-ornor of Leonard and Herbert erected for Duncan McLean, Ltd., has be.cn completed. The building, which is 40feet square, and eighteen foot in height, has at present stored within it, 6000 cases of benzine but it is capable of finding room for many more thousands of cases. Sqnie novel pro toclive measures against fire, have been adopted in its erection. A parapet, three feet high ranges around the sides of the building, and is designed to protect the roof. The skylights are made of glass, inside of which is twined wire which will keep the glass from falling through. Rollers, specially used in eh is class of store, are being brought from the United States and in the packing of the cases will constitute ;m admirable labour saving device. The depot is of. solid brick, and has a concrete floor. Tt is entered through heavy iron doors placed three feet from the ground. Speaking to an li Argus” reporter, Mr J. AL-Lean stated that the depot had been badly needed in Greyinouth for many years past. Of late the necessity had, hoxvever become more acute, owing Io the considerable increase in motor vehicles and nu-.chin-ery <1 riven by petrol. ‘‘The authorities, by reason of the many disastrous outbreaks of fire, had caused more stringent regulations to be passed, one feature, particularly being the prohibition of private persons from storing more than a small num ber of cases of benzine. The depot he maintained, would allow these persons to purchase from the various oil companies, five eases of benzine at similar prices to the purchase of 25 cases. ‘ 1 When an American liner arrives in port, a company will bo able to land, say, three or four tl’o.isand cases, and have it stored at once ’’ he concluded optimistically, and xvith visions, probably, of a deep sea harbour in his mind.
