SHIFT LOST
BY 46 STATE MINERS. \esteiday some forty Stale coal miners employed at Rcwanui lost a shift, through a railway defect that ought now to be rectified. The earlv workmen s train, which is the main one (onveving the miners up to work, consisting of tour carriages, left in tow of a small locomotive, which, when the first tunnel was reached, proved lacking in power to go any further, and the train had consequently to return to Dunollie, where two of the carriages were shunted on to a side line. T’his left only a couple of carriages for (he minors, which, by having the men ]mcked into them, accommodated about .SO, whilst the remaining forty miners could not find room. The train left without them, and they had perforce to return to their homes and lose the duv's work. A second train leaves Dunollie later in the day with a bigger locomotive, and the Department should make the obvious readjustment, attaching the larger engine to the early train, so as to avoid any repetition of yesterday’s mishap, and Hie consequent loss of work and wages by a larao number of miners.
