DISASTER AT SEA

JAP STEAMER SINKS. .197 LIVES LOST. (Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assn.) TOKIO, July 29. The North Japan Steamship Company’s steamer Tairei Maru was Jost off Capo Notoro last evening, and 138 passengers and fifty-nine of a crew were drowned. Eighteen passengers and five of the crew landed in lifeboats at Notoro village. The cause of tho disaster is variously reported, and it is uncertain whether tho vessel struck the rocks or collided with another ship.
