BIG EARTHQUAKES
In Southern California (A. and N.Z. Cable Association ) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received July 24, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, July 23. Serious earthquakes in the State of California are reported. A telegram from Los Angeles states that two severe earthquake shocks startled the city early this morning. They lasted six seconds and threw pedestrians off their feet and cracked walls, but no injuries or serious damage has been reported. Many wellknown film stars fled from their homes at Hollywood, where the shocks were particularly felt. CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE. AIANY TOWNS AFFECTED. (Received July 24, 5.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, July 24. A later telegram from San Bernardino, in California, states: —“The earthquake cabled to-day has considerably damaged this city. Many buildings were unroofed. ’ ’ Later reports show that Southern California was shaken by a series of shocks, commencing shortly after midnight, and ending at 1 o’clock. Buildings •were damaged in many towns. The inmates of prisons and asylums wore panic-stricken. Several sections report that telephone and telegraphic communication has been severed.
