The Unionist Leader (Chamberlain) is out disclaiming against the “danger” of a Labour Government. The Turks have infringed the new neutral zone at Ismid. Sir F. Bell promised London financiers to reduce their taxation in N.Z. as far as he could. New Zealanders carried off the honours in the Warraambool cycle road race. Shipping- companies have again secured delay in regard to the U.S.A. Prohibition law. Greeks get a time limit to leave Anatolia. Butter price is falling at Melbourne. Vast unemployment continues in Glasgow and in Lancashire. The German trial of Rathenau’s murderers has created a further sensation. A cure for diabetes is claimed in U.S.A. (Received October 15, at 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, October 14. It is officially stated that barely 25 per cent, of the workers in the shipbuilding' and the engineering and allied trades are at present employed in Glasgow. The number of the unemployed, in Glasgow alone totals 84,480, of whom 71,670 are men. It is estimated that it. will be necessary to distribute £1,000,000 in poor law relief in Glasgow during this winter. The Lancashire mills, owing to there being depression in the cotton industry, will continue to close both on Saturdays and on Mondays, until the end of November.
LLOYD GEORGE WAITS UPON THE KING.
(A. and N.Z. Cable Association,] (Received October 15, at 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, October 13. Mr Lloyd George had an audience with the King to-day. The audience lasted an hour and a half. The Prime Minister presented to the King a detailed report on the Near East situation.
TURKS AGAIN INFRINGE NEUTRAL ZONE.
(Received October 15, at 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, October 14. The “Daily Telegraph’s” Constantinople correspondent states that, whether designedly or accidentally, the Kemalists have broken the convention by infringing the neutral zone in the Ismid Peninsula area (near the Bosphorus). One thousand Turkish cavalry have occupied Baltshik, four miles inside the zone. The British are now instructing the Turks in regard to the exact line. REASON FOR FRENCH WITHDRAWAL GIVEN. (Received October 15, at 5.5 p.m.) PARIS, October 13. The Premier of France, M. Poincare, at the opening of the Chamber of Deputies, replied to critics of France’s Near Eastern policy. He explained that troops were sent to Chanak without his being consulted. The sole object of the decision was to avoid a conflict with the Turks. These troops were in danger, and the first shot would have caused general war. To avoid this, a general withdrawal was ordered. M. Poincare’s statement was loudly cheered.
NEW MORATORIUM TO BE GIVEN TO GERMANY
A FIVE YEARS’ BOND ARRANGEMENT PROPOSED. (Received October 15, 5.5 p.m.) PARIS, October 14. The paper “Le Journal” says Sir F. Bradbury’s proposed Reparations Commission will grant. Germany a new moratorium for five years, concurrently with an Allied prohibition of the issue of any fiduciary stock by Germany, who would be authorised to make her payments by five-year bonds, endorsed by the creditors, and repayable yearly during the five years. -“Le Petit Parisien” says: “If the Reparations Commission does not reach some agreement for preventing a German financial collapse the proposed Brussels Conference may not be held.
