Mr O ’Halloran, of Hokitika ,was in Greymouth yesterday on a visit. Mr Allen Smith, of Griffin and Smitn Greymouth, is visiting Westport. Mr Peter McCormack, of Waiho Gorge, South Westland, was a visitor to Greymouth yesterday. Mr C. Preston ,of Dunollie Hotel, leaves by the overland express this morning for Cashmere Military oHspital. Mr and Mrs Mather, of Inchbonnie, proceed to Christchurch to-day for the purpose of attending the Grand National race carnival. The directors of the Colonial Sugar Company have notified Captain Wallis that he is to retain command of the steamer Bona. He has been granted three months’ leave. Mr A. Jolly has been appointed genera! manager of the National Bank of New Zealand, in succession to Mr D. \\. Duthie, who has become Advisory Director. Mr Jolly, who was formerly Chief Inspector, was for some time at Greymouth. The death took place at his residence, Westport, of Mr Arthur Hopkins. Deceased was a married man and leaves a young wife and child to> mourn his loss and to w’hom the sympathy of the community will be extended. The death is announced of Professor Frederick Douglas Brown, for 30 years professor of physics and chemistry at Auckland University, and a member of the Senate. Professor Brown, who was 70 years of age, retired from both positions in 1914. A Brest Association message ft Foxton says: At a largely-attended and representative meeting of Government supporters in the Manawatu electorate the candidature of Mr Joseph Linklater was confirmed. It was decided to tender Mr Edward Newman, M.P., a. farewell banquet, at which the Premier and mmebers of Cabinet will be invited. Prior to her marriage Miss Parfitt was entertained at a social by Holy Trinity Church Choir, at. the residence of Mrs Hodgkinson. The Ven Arch deacon Carr, on behalf of the choir,, presented Miss Parfitt with an oak tray, suitably inscribed, and in wishing her every happiness, he referred to the' many years of faithful service, given. ' by Miss Parfitt, as a member of Holy Trinity Choir. Mr Congrieve suitably replied on behalf of Miss Parfitt.
