FOR the purposes of both proiits and politics, the New Zealand spokesmen for the wealthy and employing classes seek tilways to insinuate wage earners should be regarded, if not as a sort of necessary evil, at least as dumb, driven cattle. The idea of Labour having an influence on the Government of the country is held up as anathema. The most prosperous Australian State is to-day directed by a Labour Government, while in the Old Country the class of privilege is clearing its decks . in anticipation of a Labour GovernI meat in the near future. Do the I workers not sec the Reform Party oWns ) tho pi css of the country, which it uses ’ persistently to poison the very wells < of public opinion. Every Labour . speech in Parliament is mangled by the ■ Tory press, whose hireling scribes ini tersperse their propaganda and play the ' part of interpreters, just as the Re- [ form Party are doing increasingly out ; of a fear -that the public opinion is • surely on the turn all over the Dornini ion. It was a truth which one Member uttered the other night in the House when he said the securing of many titles recently in this country I is to be explained by reference to the transactions of sale and purchase of press support, the titles obtained being the receipts for this.press prostitution so willingly conducted. No more warning was given the public by these organs than by the Reform Party itself as to the waste that was contem-

plated. It is admitted even by Reformers now that the land booming business is gjoing to cost New Zealanders—with the exception of the sharks, of course—about live millions sterling. Many soldier settlers have lost heart, over the postponement of rent, instead of its reduction. Dr. Newman (a Tory) told the House that four or five millions of the money spent on soldier settlement was lost and ought to bo written oil. What a-bun-gle! The Government thinks of grabbing the funds of the Patriotic Societies now. Whenever the case of a neglected ex-soldier suffering from disabilities is now brought up, the Ministry look for a loophole, and say the law forbids any help being extended. The war-time pay increases granted public servants were called bonuses, so that they could be later upheld. We arc assured by Ministers that trade is now expanding, that the outlook for primary products is excellent, that 14:f millions of export trade was done last quarter—and that wages must come down! The re-opening of trade with Germany is expected further to increase the profits of those who market the products of labour—but the freezing workers must have wages cut, or get out! The Government declare very few immigrants arc idle—but who are the thousands, then, that arc undoubtedly unemployed? Al ere New Zealand workers!
