ATHLETICS.
AN AMATEUR EXPELLED. FOR TAKING ASSUMED NAME. CHRISTCHURCH, July 25. C. M. Walden, the well-known amateur runner, appeared before the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association to-night to answer charges of having on various occasions between October and March in Australia competed at athletic meetings under an assumed name. Walden denied the allegations, but after an inquiry had been held by tho Centre, he was declared to have forfeited his amateur status. A lady, whose name tho Chairman requested should not be published, gave evidence as to having seen Wald-cn running at a night meeting of the Victory Athletic Club at Marybrinong, near Melbourne, on February 9. Walden had run on that occasion, she said, in a cash event under th-e name of C. Will is. Waldon flatly contradicted the lady’s statement and declared ho had never run in any event in Australia, cither as an amateur or as a professional. The chairman produced a letter from the secretary of the Victory Athletic Proprietary Ltd., who stated Walden had run on the proprietary ground, out of Melbourne, and had, ho believed, also run at Stowell. The chairman said, under tlio centre’s decision, Walden would now be (debarred from competing in any amateur athletic event in the world.
