TAUPO EARTHQUAKES.

LAKE SHORE DROPS TWO FEET. The first earthquake of tho s-ories which has been affecting the East Coast districts on the line of subterranean thermal activity from White Island to the Taupo district and Mount Ngaruhoe occurred at AVhakatane on Friday, May 12, ten WH?cks ago. Since then there have been several periods of “activity’’ more or less clearly separated by times of quiescence, and latterly the series seems to have been marked by more severe shakes than in the earlier phases. The earthquakes have resulted in a portion of Air AV. J. Napier’s farm at AVaikaipo Bay, on tho north shore ft the lake, subsiding 2 feet, and the water from Lake Taupo is now within 22ft. of the verandah of the dwellinghouse on the property. Describing a recent shock th-e Auckland “Herald” correspondent says that the heaviest vibrations lasted for 23 seconds, but- lighter vibrations were perceptible for eight minutes. The shock was the heaviest yet felt, and many small articles in houses were upset. One chimney was cracked, and in one house a large mirror screwed on a wall was shattered.
