AMERICAN STRIKE.
ATTEMPT TO FOOL PEOPLE. BY MOBILISING TROOPS. WASHINGTON, July 14. The U.S.A. Departments of War and Justice have received requests for 2500 troops with deputy United States marshals, the troops being for protection of railway property end movements of trains. The Departments have appealed to local authorities to suppress any violence arising out of the railway strike. They declare that Federal troops will lie used only when the local ■ uthorities are helpless. STRIKE BREAKERS BEATEN. CALIFORNIAN AFFRAY. (Received July 14 nt 10.10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, July 14. Fifty armed railway strikers surrounded the Western Railroad’s workshops at Oroville, in California, in which 200 shots were fired; they then rushed the buildings. They beat the strike breakers. Many of the latter were knocked senseless while they had been asleep. I COMPANIES TO BLAME. WASHINGTON, July 11. Mr Jewell, head of ‘the Railway Employees’ Department, of the American Federation of Labour, has telegraphed to President Harding, denying that any attacks were made on mails, and laying the responsibility for the interference. on the r: ilway companies.
